This illustration of Lucifer Morningstar was inspired by DC Vertigo's comic book series Lucifer, a spinoff of Neil Gaimon's The Sandman series and by Dante Alighieri's The Divine Comedy.  Lucifer is a handsome devil dressed in a tuxedo shown reading and being amused by Dante's first volume, Inferno.

Divine Irony - Final Sketch

Lucifer is a handsome devil dressed in a tuxedo shown reading and being amused by Dante's novel.  Not sure yet what will be going on in the background.  I may show his angelic wings, his leather wings, or fire.  

This illustration will be painted in oil on masonite panel.  Work in progress.

Divine Irony - Concept Sketch #2

This sketch was inspired by DC Vertigo's comic book series Lucifer, a spinoff of Neil Gaimon's The Sandman series and by Dante Alighieri's novel The Divine Comedy.

This sketch was the second one I did while trying to figure out the composition I wanted for the final painting.

The Ashes of Defeat

This illustration was inspired by the outstanding performance that Robert Downey Jr delivered as the genius, billionaire, philanthropist Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the film Avengers: Infinity War by Anthony and Joe Russo.  This piece was also inspired by the amazing music composed by Alan Silvestri for the film, which I listened to while I worked on this.

Blaze

This illustration was created when a friend of mine had put together a Heroes RPG game and was looking for character art to use for the players and the villains.       

It was a lot of fun tinkering with comic book style art and it gave me a chance to work with ink.  "Blaze" was inspired by several comic books that I had read throughout the 80's and 90's.

It is interesting to look back at these illustrations and see the parts I still like about them and the parts that I would change.

Melpomene the Dark Muse

"From the realm of Mount Helikon, the nine muses sing their songs to mankind's imagination.  One, however, is condemned to the darkest corner of that realm... she is Melpomene, daughter of Zeus and mother of the Sirens.  She is the muse of tragedy, of pain... of fear.  She sings her dark song, drawing forth our worst aberrations.  She is the shaper of nightmares.  She is the bridge between the soul and darkness.  Tragedy brings her... darkness sustains her... lost souls are merely Blood for the Muse."

Melpomene the dark muse is the creation of awarding winning writer Terry West.  I created this illustration for the back cover of his comic book, Blood for the Muse.

Jade

Jean Grey as the Phoenix

During the mid to late '80's I discovered the X-Men comic books.  I fell in love with Wolverine and I loved the dynamic between him and Jean Grey.  This was my first and only illustration (unfinished) of Jean.  I wanted to draw her while she was tapping into her Phoenix powers of telekinesis.

Siouxsie & the Banshees: Face to Face

After I saw the film Batman Returns in the theater I was obsessed with Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal of Catwoman and with Siouxsie & the Banshees' theme song Face to Face  scored for the film.  The song is haunting and beautiful.  It describes the dichotomy of Batman and Catwoman's complex relationship.  

This illustration was part of an assignment in my Commercial Art class where I had to make a template with cut outs and create "copies" of it.  Everything that I painted onto the paper represents all the areas a cut out with an exact knife.  Ugh.

Brandon Lee as The Crow

This illustration is part of a portfolio set created to pay tribute to the memory of two extraordinary martial artists and action film stars.  Never again will the world know a father and son such as Bruce and Brandon Lee.  The legacy they leave behind will be remembered for all time. 

This portfolio, called "The Little Dragon", consists of six illustrations; three images of Bruce Lee (from The Green Hornet, Enter the Dragon, and a portrait) and three images of Brandon Lee (from The Crow, Rapid Fire, and a portrait).

A Match Made in Hell - Sketch

This illustration is based on DC Vertigo's comic book series Lucifer, a spinoff of Neil Gaimon's The Sandman series.  In the Sandman universe, the fallen Light Bringer and former ruler of Hell is a handsome blonde haired man dressed in a black tuxedo with a white bow tie.  At his side is Mazikeen, his devoted ally and deadly demon lover who wields the ancient sword of the Lilim, a race descended from Lilith.

This illustration will be painted in oil on masonite panel.
