Between the world of men and transcendent divinity there exists art. Art is the will to truth made physically manifest. It is more real then Reality. It is a dialogue triumphant over Time. – Andre Malraux

Christy 2

This illustration is another tribute to one of my early influences,  Patrick Nagel.  I loved the challenge of seeing the world through Patrick's eyes and his style helped me to better understand both composition and anatomy.

This portrait is one of my favorite models in the 80's and 90's, Christy Turlington.

Amare (The Angel of Love)

This illustration is the second of a triptych series of Angels: "Peace, Love, and Joy".  My influence for this series was the stained glass works created during the Gothic period of art and the angelic art of the 15th century.

Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare

This illustration was done as an extra credit assignment for my English class during my sophomore year of high school.  I was one of the few students who loved reading Shakespeare and I jumped at the opportunity to illustrate one of my favorite poems.  I also used Patrick Nagel's style to draw the woman since he was a huge influence for me during these early years.

In case you didn't know, the opening line on this illustration is also a lyric in Sting's song Sister Moon from the album Nothing Like the Sun.

Letter Transition: V for Vampire

This illustration was done in my Commercial Art class.  It was a "transition" assignment starting where I had to start with a letter in the alphabet and transform it into an object.  I loved this assignment and went with a vampire theme.

Depeche Mode: Black Celebration

This is a song illustration that I created for Depeche Mode's title track from the album Black Celebration.  Without a doubt, this album is my favorite.  I bought it when it was released and I felt the songs resonated with me during that time of my life.

A Night in Ophir

This illustration was created to go with a poem that tells the  story of an Egyptian female vampire in the ancient port city of Ophir.

Fun Fact:  I am a bit of an Egyptologist by hobby and it was very exciting to get an assignment to illustrate something in an Egyptian theme, especially with a Gothic twist. I loved creating the border and using my extensive Egyptian library for references.

This illustration was published in the 1997 edition of An Ancient Death is the Most Beautiful, a vampire chap book.

Blaze

This illustration was created when a friend of mine had put together a Heroes RPG game and was looking for character art to use for the players and the villains.

It was a lot of fun tinkering with comic book style art and it gave me a chance to work with ink.  "Blaze" was inspired by several comic books that I had read throughout the 80's and 90's.

It is interesting to look back at these illustrations and see the parts I still like about them and the parts that I would change.

Of Flesh and Stone

I have always been fascinated by demon lore and mythology, and I was inspired to create this image of a female succubus, slowly revealing herself to her offscreen companion. I thought it would be fun to give her a tail and to have a pair of pet gargoyles at her feet.

Jean Grey as the Phoenix

During the mid to late '80's I discovered the X-Men comic books.  I fell in love with Wolverine and I loved the dynamic between him and Jean Grey.  This was my first and only illustration (unfinished) of Jean.  I wanted to draw her while she was tapping into her Phoenix powers of telekinesis.

Sting as Anne Rice's The Vampire Lestat

"That night the vampire returned to work the dark gift on Louis." We see the vampire known as Lestat consider the consequences of the act, but only for a second!

My illustration was inspired by Anne Rice's Interview With the Vampire and the idea of what Sting would have looked like, had he played the vampire on Broadway as it was proposed many years ago.

In November of 1999, as fate would have it, after listening to Sting play at the Jones Hall in Houston, I crossed paths with the man himself in an elevator!   He invited me to have drinks with him and his band and I was able to give him one of the only two artist proofs of the limited edition print series.  The other Artist Proof was a gift to Anne Rice.
