Between the world of men and transcendent divinity there exists art. Art is the will to truth made physically manifest. It is more real then Reality. It is a dialogue triumphant over Time. – Andre Malraux

Julius Caesar

Over the last year and a half I have been focused on writing my novel about Marc Antony which left me little time to draw.  On New Year's Day, I joined an art group so I could be inspired to work on my art again while I write my book.  I decided to work on a still life in order to get my hand "back in the game".  It is fitting that my subject is Julius Caesar, since he does appear in my novel.

Here he is, in progress:

The Queen of Ice and Snow - Work In Progress

After watching Disney's Frozen in 2013, I was inspired to create this illustration of Elsa.  I loved the theme of feminine independence and sisterly love.  Visually, the film left me awestruck and dazzled by the winter wonderland which the story is set in.

I am currently working on the snowflakes and the trail of a thousand tiny ice crystals which flows from Elsa's hand:

Amare (The Angel of Love)

This illustration is the second of a triptych series of Angels: "Peace, Love, and Joy".  My influence for this series was the stained glass works created during the Gothic period of art and the angelic art of the 15th century.

Merman of the Red Sea

I love the ocean and have always liked the idea of merfolk.  This illustration is part of a diptych set.  I love dichotomy and thought it would be interesting to create a set of merfolk, one who lives in the Black Sea and one who lives in the Red Sea.  This is my illustration for the Red Sea.  The Black Sea can be found here.

Mermaid of the Black Sea

I love the ocean and have always liked the idea of merfolk.  I started this back in 2006 with the intention of it being part of a diptych set.  I love dichotomy and thought it would be interesting to create a set of merfolk, one who lives in the Black Sea and one who lives in the Red Sea.  This is my illustration for the Black Sea.  The Red Sea will feature a merman.

The Ashes of Defeat

This illustration was inspired by the outstanding performance that Robert Downey Jr delivered as the genius, billionaire, philanthropist Tony Stark aka Iron Man in the film Avengers: Infinity War by Anthony and Joe Russo.  This piece was also inspired by the amazing music composed by Alan Silvestri for the film, which I listened to while I worked on this.

Eric Northman's Most Treasured Possessions

In the Fall of 2011 I discovered HBO tv series True Blood and The Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.  I fell in love with the relationship between Eric Northman and Sookie Stackhouse in the books and decided to create an illustration about them.  At this time I was also taking a Drawing I class and this became my final assignment.

Here is the original sketch:

Russell Crowe as Maximus in The Gladiator

This illustration of the Roman general Maximus pays tribute to the outstanding performance that Russell Crowe delivers as the enslaved general turned hero in the film Gladiator by Ridley Scott.  This piece was also inspired by the amazing music composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard for the film.

Interestingly enough, while visiting Austin, Texas in August of 2000 I had the honor of presenting the only Artist Proof of this original to Russell before a concert he was performing with his band Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts.  He invited me to stay for the concert as his guest and while enjoying the delightful blues/rock they played from the VIP lounge, I had the chance to meet and speak with Ron Howard!

Sorrow's Passing

This illustration was a tribute to both the anniversary of Bram Stoker's classic tale Dracula and to the man himself.  I have always loved the story of Dracula and I have always wanted to draw a ghost, so for the 100th anniversary of Dracula, which was first published on the 26th of May in 1897, I combined the two concepts.

The tomb stone to the left reads "Abraham Stoker, 1847 - 1912, Beloved Husband", however the tomb stone to the right starts to read "West.." which was the start of "Westenra" as in Lucy Westenra who was Dracula's first victim.

Is the ghost Stoker's wife?  Or is it Lucy?

Solar Angel

This illustration was part of a diptych set and was inspired by late Czech Art Nouveau painter Alfons Mucha.  I love creating  art that explores dichotomy and decided to illustrate a pair of sun and moon angels.  Solar angel is depicted in yellows and oranges with the rays of the sun.

Raguel the Watcher of Angels

This illustration is a first study for the archangel Raguel in a project I have in the works called "The Archangels and the Fallen Ones" which is inspired by Gustave DorĂ©'s illustrated novel of John Milton's, Paradise Lost

Raguelwhich means "friend of God" is one of the Seven Archangels as listed in the ancient Enoch writings.  Raguel is know to "take vengeance on the world of luminaries" or he is the one who watches over the good behavior of the angels.

Ab Luci - Concept Painting

'Ab Luci' is Latin for "From Light".  This illustration was my first attempt at a large scale watercolor painting on cold press illustration board and it was a good learning experience for me, however, I am not happy with the results.

This painting is part of my triptych series Bellum Lucis et Umbrae (The Battle of Light and Shadow) and will be overhauled and painted in oil.

Here are the progress shots:

Angel of Light

This illustration is part of a diptych set called "Darkness and Light".  I have always been fascinated by dichotomy and this set was meant to explore it.  I collaborated with artist Lee Seed and her illustration is title "Darkness" which depicted a male demon in shades of blue and grey.  My "Light" is his opposite, a female angel in sepia and brown.  The set was a lot of fun to do.
