Between the world of men and transcendent divinity there exists art. Art is the will to truth made physically manifest. It is more real then Reality. It is a dialogue triumphant over Time. – Andre Malraux

Julius Caesar

Over the last year and a half I have been focused on writing my novel about Marc Antony which left me little time to draw.  On New Year's Day, I joined an art group so I could be inspired to work on my art again while I write my book.  I decided to work on a still life in order to get my hand "back in the game".  It is fitting that my subject is Julius Caesar, since he does appear in my novel.

Here he is, in progress:

Still Life Organizational Line Drawings

Organizational line drawings provide a structural, analytical framework for a drawing.  These lines take the measure of an object's height, width, depth, and spacial relation to any other objects next to it.  Typically the lines are rough and the edges are unfinished.  I don't really like messy lines, so on all of my drawings the lines and edges are cleaner.  The samples below are some that I did during my Drawing I class in 2011.

Pokemon Pikachu

My oldest daughter brought home a few Pokemon cards one day, about 2 years ago, and things haven't been the same since!

At my daughter's request, I did a drawing of her favorite character, Pikachu, in sepia pencil.  I used her stuffed animal of Pikachu as my still life "model" and here is the result:

Aphrodite of Melos Statue

In 2011, my Drawing I class went  to the Blanton Art Museum located at the University of Texas campus.  We spent a few hours in the sculpture gallery to do figure drawing.  I have a passion for ancient history, particularly Greek, Roman, and Egyptian history, so this was my favorite part of the field trip that day.

Still Life Contour Line Drawings

These still life contour line drawings are done slowly and by drawing a one continuous line that captures the outline of an object or figure to emphasize the mass and volume of the subject rather than the detail.  The drawings below are some samples that I did while in my Drawing I class.

Coffee Mug

Still life drawings are done slowly and the purpose is to capture not only the correct proportions of an object but to capture as much volume and shadow detail as possible in order to give the impression of what the object looks like in real life.

This painting was my first still life done using acrylic.

Skeletons

While I was taking a photography class my instructor allowed me to go visit an art class down the hall and on one of those days the students where drawing sketches of the class skeleton.  Here are the results of my time in the room.

Chiaroscuro Drawings

Chiaroscuro is an Italian for clear/light "chiaro" and obscure/shadow "obscuro".  In art it is a contrast between light and dark and is usually applied to bold contrasts affecting a whole composition but is also for the use of effects representing contrasts of light to achieve a sense of volume in objects or figures.  The drawings below are some samples I did while taking my Drawing I class.

Rampant Lion

This illustration was done for two reasons: 1) as an exercise in metal texture and 2) to prepare myself for some Arthurian illustrations that I have had in the works for some time now.  As part of my research, the shield itself was influenced by a traditional medieval armory collection.

Still Life Gesture Drawings

Gesture drawing is done in rapid quick lines for the purpose of capturing the inner/outer structure and basic proportions of an object with varying volume and mass detail to give the impression of what the object looks like. Typically they only take a minute or less to compose.  The drawings below are some samples that I did while in my Drawing I class.
