Between the world of men and transcendent divinity there exists art. Art is the will to truth made physically manifest. It is more real then Reality. It is a dialogue triumphant over Time. – Andre Malraux

Elaine

This illustration was another tribute to one of my early influences,  Patrick Nagel.  It also was the first time I drew one in a large scale format.  I loved the challenge of seeing the world through Patrick's eyes and his style helped me to better understand both composition and anatomy.

This portrait is one of my favorite models in the 80's and 90's, Elaine Irwin.

A Match Made in Hell - Sketch

This illustration is based on DC Vertigo's comic book series Lucifer, a spinoff of Neil Gaimon's The Sandman series.  In the Sandman universe, the fallen Light Bringer and former ruler of Hell is a handsome blonde haired man dressed in a black tuxedo with a white bow tie.  At his side is Mazikeen, his devoted ally and deadly demon lover who wields the ancient sword of the Lilim, a race descended from Lilith.

This illustration will be painted in oil on masonite panel.

Gesture Figure Drawings

Gesture figure drawing is done with rapid quick lines for the purpose of capturing the inner/outer structure and basic proportions of an figure with varying volume and mass detail to give the impression of what the figure looks like. Typically they only take a minute or less to compose.  The figure drawings below are from live models that I did while in my Drawing I class.

Gary Oldman as Vlad Dracula the Impaler

"We Draculs have a right to be proud! What devil or witch was ever so great as Attila, whose blood flows in these veins!"

When Francis Ford Coppola decided to make Bram Stoker's Dracula, he made a movie legend. Considered to be one of the few Dracula films that follows the original novel, Coppola blended the history of Vlad the Impaler with that of Dracula.

How do you cast such a diverse and interesting lead role? Give it to Gary Oldman, one of Britain's finest character actors! This illustration is a tribute to the outstanding performance that Gary Oldman gave in the film Bram Stoker's Dracula

Bloody Mary

With her victim's blood pouring into her hands, this stunning female vampire revels in her bloodlust! This illustration was the first to be done for my gothic vampire series, Red Death, drawn exclusively in black and white with a touch of red.  On a side note, this is my tribute the vampire Sonja Blue in Sunglasses After Dark by Nancy Collins.

This image was used as the cover of the Winter 1996 edition of the magazine In Darkness Eternal.

Unicorn's Frolic

This illustration was a private commission from a client who wanted a unicorn painting.  What I loved most about this piece was that I got to illustrate both a mythological creature and a forest scene, which I had never done before.  I also loved doing the research for this one.

Auguste Coronne Bust

In 2011, my Drawing I class went  to the Blanton Art Museum located at the University of Texas campus.  We spent a few hours in the sculpture gallery to do figure drawing.  I have a passion for ancient history, particularly Greek, Roman, and Egyptian history, so this was my favorite part of the field trip that day.
