Between the world of men and transcendent divinity there exists art. Art is the will to truth made physically manifest. It is more real then Reality. It is a dialogue triumphant over Time. – Andre Malraux

Sean Connery as Ramirez in Highlander

This illustration is of Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, played brilliantly by Sean Connery in the 80's film Highlander.  I used two or three different reference photos for this image and hope to finish it one day.

A Night in Ophir

This illustration was created to go with a poem that tells the  story of an Egyptian female vampire in the ancient port city of Ophir.

Fun Fact:  I am a bit of an Egyptologist by hobby and it was very exciting to get an assignment to illustrate something in an Egyptian theme, especially with a Gothic twist. I loved creating the border and using my extensive Egyptian library for references.

This illustration was published in the 1997 edition of An Ancient Death is the Most Beautiful, a vampire chap book.

Russell Crowe as Maximus in The Gladiator

This illustration of the Roman general Maximus pays tribute to the outstanding performance that Russell Crowe delivers as the enslaved general turned hero in the film Gladiator by Ridley Scott.  This piece was also inspired by the amazing music composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard for the film.

Interestingly enough, while visiting Austin, Texas in August of 2000 I had the honor of presenting the only Artist Proof of this original to Russell before a concert he was performing with his band Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts.  He invited me to stay for the concert as his guest and while enjoying the delightful blues/rock they played from the VIP lounge, I had the chance to meet and speak with Ron Howard!

Demon Lust

This illustration was done for a poem titled "Lust for Stone" by Charlee Jacob.  What I liked about this assignment was the freedom and inspiration the poem gave me to illustrate a female demon in hell.

This image was published as an interior illustration in the 1997 edition of Shadowfire, a gothic horror magazine.

Blaze

This illustration was created when a friend of mine had put together a Heroes RPG game and was looking for character art to use for the players and the villains.

It was a lot of fun tinkering with comic book style art and it gave me a chance to work with ink.  "Blaze" was inspired by several comic books that I had read throughout the 80's and 90's.

It is interesting to look back at these illustrations and see the parts I still like about them and the parts that I would change.
