I was inspired to create this illustration by listening to Glen Danzig's album, Black Aria, by Neil Gaiman's character Lucifer in the Vertigo comic book Sandman, and by Gustave Doré's illustrated novel of John Milton's, Paradise Lost.
The Light-bringer and his third of the heavenly host have lost the Battle of Heaven. Lucifer is seen standing defiantly outside of Heaven's Gates, proudly enduring the punishment inflicted upon him. He will never know the feeling of angel wings again. However, as he said himself "Better to reign in Hell, than to serve in Heaven."
